Pelvic Health Q & A

What does pelvic health mean?

Pelvic health refers to the state of your bladder, reproductive organs, bowels, and all the support structures in your pelvis (for example, your pelvic floor muscles).

While it’s naturally important that you’re free of disease and dysfunction, good pelvic health refers to not only the lack of serious problems but also the optimal wellness of all of these areas independently and as a whole group.

What happens when pelvic health is poor?

When your pelvic health suffers, it can affect your physical, mental, and sexual wellness. Some common pelvic health problems include:

  • Urinary incontinence: stress or urgency urinary incontinence
  • Decrease in vaginal lubrication
  • Decrease in vaginal elasticity
  • Painful sex
  • Pelvic organ prolapse: when one or more pelvic organs sink into the vaginal opening

Many women find these problems discouraging, upsetting, and incredibly frustrating, and understandably so.

Dr. Dhillon understands and relates to her patients on a personal level, so she takes the time to help you understand what the pelvic health problems are and how you can manage them.

What causes pelvic health problems?

Pelvic health problems can start because of:

  • Strain on the pelvic floor during pregnancy and childbirth (especially multiple births)
  • Hormone depletion during menopause
  • Infections
  • Bladder irritation
  • Certain medications

Other factors, for example, your weight, can also play into problems like urinary incontinence. This may happen because extra pounds can place additional strain on your bladder (and pelvis in general).

How are urinary incontinence and other pelvic health issues treated?

At Merak Wellness and Skincare, Dr. Dhillon provides personalized counseling for pelvic health recovery. Depending on what kind of symptoms you’re experiencing, she may recommend:

  • Hormone replacement therapy: bioidentical hormones (BHRT)
  • Pelvic floor therapy: special pelvic muscle exercises at home
  • Weight management: medical weight loss if you struggle with weight
  • Vaginal restoration treatments: Morpheus8 microneedling and radiofrequency
  • Neuromuscular reeducation: EmpowerRF

Dr. Dhillon emphasizes noninvasive, leading-edge treatments that don’t require downtime or surgery. Many patients experience improved pelvic health almost immediately after starting their customized treatment plan.
